From Jim N5NVP: At the end of October 2008 we had 33 Active Affiliated Clubs. Eleven of these are Active Affiliated Special Service Clubs (SSCs). Additionally, there are 23 Inactive Affiliated Clubs.
It is a pleasure to know that clubs around the state are making Amateur Radio License classes available for people who are interested in getting their license. Thanks especially to Acadiana ARA for the class they initiated at the beginning of October 2008 for the class of eleven young folks. Thanks also to Southeast La Amateur Radio Club for their class which ended at the end of October with a total of eleven people passing their exam. Keep up the good work.

Annual SKYWARN Recognition Day Coming: The Annual SKYWARN Recognition Day begins at 0000 UTC on December 6 and will last 24 hours. This is an event in which ham radio operators work the 100 National Weather Service stations throughout America - this time just for the fun of it.
For 364 days of the year, Amateur Radio operators with the Skywarn program provide the National Weather Service with critical, ground level reporting of major weather events. But one day a year, the ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio, and Skywarn join in recognizing the hams' service and light up the airwaves just for fun.
While some sites will use communications modes including PSK-31, RTTY, packet, and CW, most stations will operate on 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, and 2 meter frequencies using voice communications. The use of repeaters to make contacts is allowed. VoIP modes like IRLP and Echolink are also encouraged. There are no specific band plans for the event but participants are encouraged to make all contacts using portions of the bands available to Technician or General class licensees. The Extra portion of the bands may be used if band conditions get crowded. Contact as many radio operators and NWS stations as you can and exchange your signal strength, location, and current weather. After the event, participants can file for a great Weather Service Skywarn certificate by sending your electronic logsvia email to Matthew.Mehle@noaa.gov.

Louisiana Memorial Scholarship: I encourage clubs and individuals to contribute to the Louisiana Memorial Scholarship and encourage licensed college students to apply for the annual $500 scholarship available to them. The application period is October 1, 2008, to February 1, 2009.
