    AA0OM is Kansas Radio Amateur of the Year !

    Pony Express Special Event station will be on air Aug. 31st.
    The date changed from that shown in QST.
    Operating as K0ASA the Crown ARA will set up near Hanover, KS as part
    of the Hollenberg Pony Express Station Festival.
    Good news for Kansans, they will operate on 3540KHz. See Aug. QST page 80.

    WA5FLV EC for Neosho and Labette Counties reports on Special Event:
    CAARC participated in the Elks Kids Fishing Tournament at Elks Lake south of Chanute.
    First time to officially deploy my emergency trailer. Set up VHF/UHF,
    HF SSB and HF digital. Windy cool day (June 7th) and it had rained
    but there was a good bunch of kids and parents.
    A few stopped by to look and ask questions.

    Field Day !

    Field Day 2008 is in the log.
    From what I have seen and heard it was a very successful year.

    We had an Amateur Radio Week proclamation courtesy of Ken-KKØHF.
    Coffeyville also had Field Day weekend designated WØAIB- Larry, our Public Information
    Coordinator has received media reports
    from most of the groups that set up for FD this year. Some were Web stories and
    others in ink and paper. Newton and Hutchinson obtained pre-event radio spots.
    Johnson County RAC had a first this year. The Kansas City Star covered their
    Shawnee Indian Mission Museum site. Even the OTs don't remember that
    happening before. All this is the result of your hard work.
    Don't stop here. When your club schedules classes, holds officer elections
    or participates in an exercise particularly with< emergency management
    or other county agency) write it up and send it
    to the paper. In the past I wrote up the picnic. It made the weekly paper.

    There was some bad weather Friday and again Saturday morning. McPherson decided not to set up.
    They had a drill with the county the weekend before and their site was, well, swampy.
    Chanute was barely on the air. The storm Saturday moved down the Yellow Brick Road and hit them
    early afternoon. There was significant lightning so they shut down before they really got going.

    Hutchinson operated in the Reno Co. command trailer on the West side of town.
    There's a de-commisioned fire station there and the club sets up behind it.
    Many years ago there was a ham stationed there. The tower still has a couple of antennas
    that have seen better days. Tom-WØUY and Bill-WØGUY lead off their 1A effort with CW.
    Zack - WØZC smoked up a brisket and some pork for the bunch. I'll bet that smelled good.
    Newton worked out of a Hesston College cabin West of Newton.
    It's good that they put up signs at the turns because I would have missed it for sure.
    The Boeing Bears and the Wichita ARC went together this time. The Boeing Employees lake
    on the South side of town was their venue. They had good turnout and kept 6 stations
    operating the entire time. Were not counting 10 and 15 this year, right ?
    They had difficulty with PSK31. Sure they were using a vertical but still....

    Most groups use computers for logging these days. Many are taking advantage of off the shelf devices
    to network their stations. JoCo. used a 2.4 Gig. system to tie in the stations that were spread out
    over the 1000 ft maximum distance. Others use a simple wireless router placed high in the clear.
    It's fun to see how the other operators in your club are doing and if they have a band opening.

    CW appeared to have the upper hand at times this year. Good CW ops were hearing stations better
    at the bottom of the bands than their Phone counterparts up high. At least that's my observation.
    40 did pop open late Sunday and 20 came back for day 2 however.

    I received Field Day messages from Reno County, Newton, South Heartland Contest Assn.,
    BEARS/WARC, Phillips Co. and Trojan.
    KØBXF received a message from Hiawatha ARC. and WØOYH from Johnson County RAC.

    KCØPTL- Emily, ASM for Youth Activities, visited Jayhawk, Johnson County RAC,
    Santa Fe Trail and Wheat State Wireless this year.

    All in all a good weekend.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Quivira Council Encampment 2008 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Amateur Radio made an appearance at the 2008 Scout Encampment
    at the Kansas State Fair Grounds Hutchinson, KS, 26 April.
    The activities started around 9:00AM and lasted until 4:00 PM.
    Over 4,000 scouts and adults attended. The event gave us the opportunity
    to educate scouts about Amateur Radio. Many Scouts and leaders took
    the opportunity to talk on the radio and made contacts on SSB HF, PSK HF and 2 meter.
    We setup three tables to help educate Scouts to the wonderful hobby of Amateur Radio.
    Table 1 consisted of a HF radio and a 2 meter radio. Table 2 contained handout information
    and a HF radio operating PSK. Table 3 was a SKYWARN display.
    Many folks had heard about SKYWARN but didn't know that they were
    involved in Amateur Radio. Sherry Weir took the time to explain weather
    and the involvement of the volunteer community in keeping us all safe.
    The local SKYWARN supports the Wichita, KS National Weather Service
    by providing ground truth information during severe weather.
    Special thanks to those that came out and supported the event: AC0EG - Harvey Jones
    KB0SQQ - Sherry Weir ( NWS) - Wichita, KS SKYWARN area coordinator)
    N0LD - Randy Wing
    N5GUI - James Whitfield
    WA2MVT - Marty Brennan
    Also thanks to Ron Cowan (KB0DTI), The American Radio Relay League -
    Kansas Section Manager, for providing scout related handouts.
    We were surprised at the number of adults that had moved into the area and asked
    about clubs or had an interest and just didn't know how to start.
    We took a number of pictures, http://bears.harveyjones.info,
    select "Encampment 2008 event".
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~YOUTH ACTIVITIES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    This year's Dayton was very successful! Our table had over 70 youth stop by
    and the kids really enjoyed our activities offered.
    The dinner was also a huge success and we had a pretty good crowd.
    The Dayton Amateur Radio Association let us use their facilities
    to host the dinner. We look forward to planning next year's youth lounge.

    Two students with Kansas connections received 2008 scholarships
    from the ARRL Foundation. The Paul and Helen L. Grauer Scholarship
    for $1000 went to James (Riley) Dunn, KC0KTP, of Overland Park, Kansas.
    Jonathan Rather, KC0CTR, Chanute, Kansas received the
    Irving W. Cook, WA0CGS, Scholarship, also for $1000.

    Radio Roots, written by Paul R. Huff, N8XMS, is an example of what happens
    when an older generation inspires their children or grandchildren
    to become a ham. See the story at:
    < http://www.arrl.org/news/features/2008/05/30/10136/?nc=1 >

    As always, be sure to send me your local news and ideas to make amateur radio
    more available for kids!
