    Section News

News last updated: Wed, August 6, 2008 at 12:28 PM ET

Still no new sunspot cycle though there have been some good six meter openings and some activity has recently been noted on 10 meters. I suspect two meters should be popping, too. Some openings have been heard on the FM frequencies. Keep the faith. We'll eventually have better and quieter conditions for hf operation. That said, it pays to check out things either on the air or on the packet clusters for activity. Surprises always lurk around the corner!! I spoke to NR0X at the Cedar Rapids Hamfest who said he had recently work Morocco on six meters!! That's really great from Iowa! Congrats the CVARC on a good hamfest. Good forums, lots of gear and a good variety of gear, and lots of good fellowship. The cinnamon rolls were tasty, too!!

Time to Upgrade? The Muscatine Area Volunteer Examiners will be conducting exams for all classes of Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) licenses on Saturday, August 9th, at 1:30 PM at the Muscatine Public Safety Building. Pre-registration is requested. For more information, visit www.muscatinehams.org

    Emergency Preparedness -

The state of Iowa has prepared itself to be the recipient of 10.9 million dollars that will be coming to us through the Public Safety Interoperability Communications (PSIC) Grant program.

We will be disbursing approximately 8 million dollars to support local interoperability projects. We are in the process as a state board, deciding how to best put the grant monies to work for all of us.

We will begin taking applications and they should be submitted through the application process that is attached to this message. John Benson from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management has done a good job of laying out expectations and information as to how you can apply for the monies.

Please read all of the material carefully so you do not exclude your submission by failing to properly submit your application.

The application and guide are attached to this email. They may also be found on the web at http://www.dps.state.ia.us/ISP/Interoperability/index.html.

Respectfully, Chairman Vice-Chair Todd Misel Dina McKenna

Here is a ARES report from Boone county. While there was no traffic passed, they have the machinery in place in case an emergency did occur. What is going on in your area? (send reports to n0jl@arrl.org)

IOWA SECTION YOUTH AWARD - Iowa Section Youth Award American Radio Relay League The Iowa Section Youth Award is intended to recognize a young ham, who has demonstrated his or her tremendous dedication to Amateur Radio through his or her activities. Although there are several national awards of similar merit, James Lasley, N0JL, recognized the need for an award that honors outstanding young hams on the local level, and Joe Hoepfner, KE0J, agreed to help create the award. Thus, the Iowa Section Youth Award was born. Requirements Nominees for the Iowa Section Youth Award must meet the following requirements to be considered for this award: A current Iowa resident A licensed Amateur Radio operator Under 21 years old Timeline Nominations (including the nomination form and any supporting documentation) for the Iowa Section Youth Award must be submitted on or before September 15, 2008. The judges will select an award recipient based on their involvement in ham radio, especially community service, promotion, operating, technical knowledge, and enthusiasm. All decisions of the judges are final.
