ARRL Seeks Computer-Based Multimedia Presentations and Videos

NEWINGTON, CT, Feb 18, 2003--ARRL Field and Educational Services (F&ES) is seeking Amateur Radio presentation programs or slide shows that utilize Microsoft PowerPoint or similar slide-viewing software. F&ES also is interested in VHS and digital video programs.

"We'd like to add to the materials we offer hams through the ARRL Video Series," said Mary Lau, N1VH, who's coordinating the project. "Demonstrations, tutorials and basic how-tos on a variety of topics can add interest to club meetings, special community events, or public exhibition."

Lau said a laptop computer-delivered program can benefit efforts to educate and inform hams or the general public. "Videos have long been popular at meetings and seminars," she noted. The ARRL Web site's Multimedia Frequently Asked Questions page has further information. As it points out, the League's video library needs media in forms that are "easily portable, easily presented and up-to-the-minute." In addition, computer-based shows and slide presentations can go many places where the use of a videocassette player might prove impractical or inconvenient.

Lau cites the Recruitment Slide Show as an example of the kinds of PC-based presentations F&ES is looking for. As file size and download speed may be an issue for downloading submissions from the ARRL Web site, F&ES wants to offer the best submissions by topic collection in CD-ROM format.

Submissions must contain original material and should not use music, video clips or copyrighted materials owned by others without appropriate permissions. Submissions should include a printed cover sheet that describes the program, system requirements and file sizes and that notes any use of materials used with the permission of others.

Topic choice can be any Amateur Radio topic of interest to hams or targeted for a non-ham community. Submissions accepted for use and distribution by ARRL will require the signing of a release form provided by ARRL.

"The CDs selected for distribution would be made available to clubs and interested individuals for the cost of duplicating, shipping and handling--just as our video program operates," Lau explained. Presentations and slide shows submitted should be placed on disc or CD-ROM (file zipping is acceptable). Videos should be in VHS or DVD format and not exceed 20 minutes in length.

Slide presentations may include:

Send presentation or slide show on disc, CD-ROM, VHS tape or DVD to: Multimedia Project, c/o Mary Lau, N1VH, ARRL Field and Educational Services, 225 Main St, Newington, CT 06111.
