DXCC Annual List Clarification

Sep 3, 2008 15:12 ET
Bill Moore, NC1L

Since the DXCC Annual List has not been published in print for many years a point of clarification may be needed to help explain how the list works...

As was the case when it was published there were certain requirements that needed to be met in order to make the list. Including:

Anyone 'Current' on the DXCC Honor Roll for the period are automatically listed. (On the Honor Roll modes achieved, only)

A submission must have been made during the period.

During the period your number on an active award must have increased by, at least, one point.

eg: If in 2006 you had 225 on 160 Meters and in a 2007 submission you did not increase this number by, at least, one point, the 160 Meter Award will not appear in the yearbook. However, if your 160 Meter Award went from 225 in 2006 to 229 in 2007, your callsign will appear.

The DXCC Annual List reflects 'Activity'

DXCC issues 70cm EME award Number One!

Aug 27, 2008 07:51 ET
Bill Moore, NC1L

DXCC is pleased to announce the issuance of award number 1 on 70cm EME (432 MHz) to Jan Bruinier, DL9KR!

First licensed in 1951 and a career in civil aviation Jan retired from the cockpit 1991, then worked as a consulting engineer until 2003.

His 70cm station consists of 16 long yagis (24el, 8,5 wl booms) of his own design with open wire feeder. Preamp ATF58143 cavity into 23dBm mixer into TS870. TX 1500w.

With the guidance of his elmer, Charlie O'Brien W2EQS, Jan achieved 160 Meter DXCC in 1985 endorsing it to 152 entities. Jan was also helpful to Stewart Perrry, W1BB who as you may remember achieved 160 meter DXCC number one in 1976!

Congratulations to Jan and, who will be next?

DXCC Rule Removal

Aug 18, 2008 13:39 ET
Bill Moore, NC1L

From the July 2008 ARRL Board of Directors Meeting:

"The Board also acted on the Programs and Services Committee report,
voting to eliminate Rule 5 from Section III of the DXCC Rules. The
Committee realized that while publishing log data can have a
detrimental effect on operating awards, it was not possible to control
such actions and the rule cannot be enforced. As part of an effort to
maintain the integrity of operating awards programs, the Board called
on staff to create resources and guidelines for QSLing and for QSL
managers. These guidelines will help people who QSL to understand the
"best practices" and help to support the work of the QSL manager so
that access to log data won't degrade Amateur Radio's long tradition
of the "honor system."

The rule reads:

5. The presentation in any public forum of logs or other
representations of station operation showing details of station
activity or other information from which all essential QSO elements
(time, date, band, mode and callsign) for individual contacts can be
derived creates a question as to the integrity of the claimed QSOs
with that station during the period encompassed by the log.
Presentation of such information in any public forum by the station
operator, operators or associated parties is not allowed and may be
considered sufficient reason to deny ARRL award credit for contacts
with any station for which such presentations have been made.
Persistent violation of this provision may result in disqualification
from the DXCC program.

"This rule cannot be enforced. In its place staff will create
resources and guidelines for QSLing and for QSL managers in order to
maintain the integrity of operating awards programs."

2007 DXCC Honor Roll List (Update)

Jul 16, 2008 18:46 ET
Bill Moore, NC1L

Upon further review it was determined that the 2007 Honor Roll list that was published in August 2008 QST was produced from a corrupted report feature in the DXCC software. Because there is so much data produced from the raw list (almost 8,000 lines) it was not possible to do a complete review.

Since the report is too large for a line-by-line review, random samplings were checked and many were found to be OK. It was not until the complete report was published that we found the report had more errors than originally thought.

Publishing a simple correction in an upcoming issue of QST is not possible. Since the 2007 DXCC yearbook was just getting ready to go to the printer we placed it on hold. We will be expanding this issue even more to accommodate a complete reprint of the 2007 Honor Roll list (something many of you have suggested in previous years.) The 2007 Honor Roll list will also be published on the DXCC web site and this list will be separate from the current "live" online Honor Roll list.

We regret any inconvenience caused by this and we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Note: DXCC numbers as shown on the website are not affected by this problem. The report generator is a separate module that takes information from the DXCC database. The errors that were shown in the list were taken from a previous submission only.

We extend our congratulations to all who have achieved the DXCC Honor Roll and thank you for your support!
