Report of the Historical Committee
to the January 2004 meeting of the ARRL Board

Inventory and preservation

The big news in the last six months is that the historical material from the 3rd floor of the main building in Newington has now all been moved to the 2nd floor area where Perry Williams, W1UED, has been working on the inventory process with volunteer Charles Griffen, W1GYR. This puts the material into an area where the temperature and humidity are controlled, and away from the HVAC equipment and dust of the "attic." The inventory of the 125+ file cabinets still moves forward, but at a pace a bit slower than originally anticipated. About a third of the file drawers have been comprehensively inventoried, and an effort is being made to do a less detailed inventory of the rest so we have a real idea of just what is in storage.

We had hoped to be able to announce the donation of a significant collection of ARRL and Amateur Radio archival material, but that has yet to be worked out - and there is the possibility the collection may be donated to another organization.

In addition to the inventory work, Perry has work with a number of potential donors to assess whether the donations they have offered would be useful and valuable enough to add to our collection. Less than half of the offers are accepted, as storage space and prospects for future display are limited.

Considerable work went into cataloguing the donation of several large boxes of documents from the estate of Art Gentry, W6MEP. Bill Ahrens, N6NMC, was instrumental in getting the material to us - and it represents some valuable historical documentation of experimentation from the very early days of repeater technology.

After significant effort by Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, a number of items from the W1AW cellar were identified as historically valuable and they have now been added to the collection storage area. Morris Guzick, W5IO, donated an especially well preserved collection of DXCC and historically important QSL cards from his years of activity.
